The story of one man’s commitment and perseverance – from traumatic pelvic fracture to Ironman in just 13 short weeks.

In the heart of Kona, Hawaii, at the finish line of the 2024 Ironman World Championships, Michael Whetstone was greeted by his wife, marking the triumphant end to a journey filled with unexpected challenges. Michael’s path to this remarkable finish was far from ordinary. His determination, positive mindset, and unwavering belief in his own strength turned an almost devastating injury into a powerful victory.

Michael Whetstone is not just an Ironman triathlete; he’s completed 16 Ironman competitions, earning the admiration of his family, friends, and countless others who saw him face the toughest of challenges. But perhaps none of these challenges were as formidable as the one he faced in 2024.

An Ironman’s Dream Turned into a Nightmare

The Ironman triathlon is the pinnacle of endurance sports, comprising a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon. For someone like Whetstone, who was preparing for the 2024 World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, the event was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. But just months before the competition, disaster struck.

During a training race in mid-July, Whetstone suffered a severe bicycle accident, resulting in fractures to his pelvis in four places. The news was devastating. At 69 years old, facing a grueling injury just months before the World Championships, Michael’s dreams of competing seemed to be slipping away. But this was Michael Whetstone—his faith in his ability to overcome adversity was unwavering.

A Family’s Resilience and Determination

Whetstone’s approach to his recovery was grounded in the lessons he had taught his family—resilience and determination. “We can get back up on that horse and continue our journey toward the goal we originally set our sights on. Anything is possible,” he says. This positive mindset became the cornerstone of his recovery, guiding him through each step of the process.

Faced with the option of long-term bed rest or surgery, Michael chose surgery, hoping to get back to training in time for Ironman. His surgeon, Dr. Kevin Murr, MD, an orthopedic trauma specialist in Columbia, SC, recommended a cutting-edge procedure to stabilize the fractures. Dr. Murr used the CurvaFix® IM Implant, a revolutionary device intended for fixation of fractures of the pelvis.

The Curvafix Implant follows and fills curved boney pathways providing strong, load-sharing stability that may allow patients to immediately weight bear after surgery, increasing the likelihood of a faster recovery and avoiding the complications associated with prolonged immobility.

The Road to Recovery

Whetstone’s recovery journey was nothing short of inspiring. Throughout the process, he shared his progress with family and friends through a series of emails, celebrating every milestone. From the initial surgery to getting back into the pool, he remained committed to his goal. Some of his updates included:

  • July 26:CurvaFix surgery early Wednesday morning to stabilize 3 of the 4 pelvic fractures.”
  • August 8:Two weeks post-surgery, I’m back in the pool and thrilled to be moving forward.”
  • August 16:Hitting the gym nearly every day for elliptical, spin, and pool workouts.”
  • August 27:Completed my first 2,000-yard swim and walked two sub-17-minute miles.
  • September 5:Got the green light to start running and riding again!”
  • October 26: Ironman World Championship Men’s Race

Each update was a testament to his resilience and commitment to recovery, even when the odds seemed insurmountable.

The Kona Finish Line

Even though there was only 13 weeks between the date of Michael’s pelvic surgery and the day of the World Ironman Championship, Michael was ready. He swam 2.4 miles in the ocean, completing the swim in personal record time. The 112-mile bike ride, though uphill and against the wind in 85-degree weather, was another challenge that he conquered. His greatest concern, however, was the 26.2 miles of running marathon that seemed impossible just months earlier with a fractured pelvis.

“Running the marathon was probably the most challenging part,” Michael admits. “But there I was, running in the dark, in a place I’d never been, under the constant pressure of finishing before the 17-hour deadline.” But as always, Michael pushed through, crossing the finish line with just over 20 minutes to spare.

In his final dispatch from the race, Michael shared the most important part of his Ironman journey: “The most welcoming sight was not that ‘darn finish line’ but the welcoming arms of my sweetheart of over fifty years, my best cheerleader.” His wife, children, and grandchildren cheered him on, and their unwavering support, along with the prayers and encouragement of family, friends, and doctors, made his success possible.

The Power of Modern Medicine

Michael’s story is one of extraordinary strengths, but it also highlights the power of modern medicine and cutting-edge technology. The CurvaFix screws used in his surgery were crucial to his recovery, allowing him to return to full activity in record time. With the help of his doctors, physical therapists, and coach, Michael was able to not only recover from his injury but to compete in one of the most demanding events in the world.

His journey is a testament to the human spirit, showing that with faith, determination, and the right support, anything is possible—even to overcome the most severe setbacks to achieve a lifelong dream.

As Michael Whetstone crosses the finish line at Kona, his story is a source of inspiration for athletes and individuals everywhere. It’s a reminder that no matter how hard life may get, it’s always worth getting back up and continuing the journey toward our goals.

“Thanks to the doctors, surgeons, therapists, my coach, and training partners, most importantly the countless thoughts, prayers, and blessings,” Michael concludes. “We were all praying for the Lord’s answer to our prayers, and we are grateful for His answers.”
